Are you interested in buying or enquiring about a commission for a papercut, drawing, screenprint or greeting cards for Christmas? Past clients have chosen images of their homes and places that are significant to them. Chloe has also been commissioned by workplaces and charities to make Christmas cards, prints and papercuts of places of work and buildings connected to their workplaces.

Chloe did an amazing job creating a papercut of Lambeth Palace for a wedding present for my wife. The architectural detail is incredible while also capturing the trees and plants that are around the building.  Her artwork comes highly recommended and is a talking point in our flat.
— William Holmes
We couldn’t have been happier or more grateful for Chloe’s imagination, talent, and incredible skill in making such a beautiful piece to go on our order of service for our wedding. We had so many compliments on the day, and have a wonderful papercut to keep forever to remind us of our wedding. Oli also commissioned Chloe to make a surprise Paper Anniversary present for Holly, 1 year later. So we have two incredibly special art pieces for our new home.
— Oli Taylor and Holly Maltby
We are so delighted to have Chloe’s artwork, alongside that of our pupils, adorning the corridors of City of London School: it is stunning in its intricacy and its impact. In the last two years, it has also provided wonderful imagery for some of the postcards and Christmas cards that I send.
— Alan Bird, Head of City of London School

Papercutting Process

Watch the Palace of Versailles appear, in two-dimension. Materials: scalpel, cutting mat, pencil drawing of the Palace of Versailles on cartridge paper (59.4 x 84.1cm)

Watch the process of papercutting. Here I am cutting out the Palace of Versailles in France on paper. Materials: scalpel, cutting mat, pencil drawing of the ...

On location

It all begins in pencil. I make several small sketches responding to the place and transform the buildings and plants into two dimensional patterns. I also make a drawing of where the different elements of the composition will sit, and draft some small scale papercuts.

Drawing

Back at my studio, I draw out a pattern - concentrating on keeping it as one sheet of paper – similar to lace. I'll explore various options, before making a draft papercut to see how to best translate it into paper. Finally, I have a drawing to start cutting.

Cutting

Then, I take a scalpel to it. The scalpel's smallest mark is the size of a pin prick, to enable a detailed range of shapes. I hold the scalpel like a pencil, so the process has a similar feeling to drawing. I slice away from internal points and corners, trying to keep an even pressure. I tend to work from the middle of the picture,  outwards. As the papercut develops, I might consider changing the design - pausing to refer to other sketches. I'm cautious -  once paper is removed, it can't be re-added! I sometimes also use a lasercutter to transform my drawings into papercuts.

Finish

When it is complete the pencil marks are removed and depending on the finish of the papercut it is spray painted. Following this, it is mounted onto coloured or white paper. I use beautiful paper from G. F Smith. Clients chose the colour and can also order the image to be made into products such as limited edition prints, cards, invitations and orders of service for Weddings.
